Turkish authorities have confirmed that the crew of a Turkish-owned cargo ship is safe following a collision with a bulk carrier off the coast of Iran. The Turkish General Directorate of Maritime Affairs (DSGM) reports that the rescue operation involved coordination between the rescue centers in Ankara and Bandar Abbas.
The incident involved the Knidos, a general cargo ship managed by Elkenz Shipping of Istanbul. The 8,900 dwt vessel was en route from Dammam Port in Saudi Arabia to Mina Saqr Port in the UAE when it collided with the Nadeen, a 28,396 dwt bulk carrier coming from India. The collision, which occurred shortly after midnight local time, impacted the Knidos on its starboard stern quarter, causing the engine room to take on water and putting the vessel at risk of capsizing.
Following the collision, the 13 crew members aboard the Knidos were forced to abandon ship and were subsequently rescued from a life raft by the Nadeen. The crew was safely transferred aboard the Nadeen, which is registered in St. Vincent & Grenadines and managed from the UAE.
Fortunately, no injuries have been reported. The Nadeen is currently underway, but its next port of call has not been disclosed.
