Australian authorities have arrested three men linked to a scheme to import $270 million worth of liquid methamphetamine, marking the latest significant drug-smuggling operation in a country known for its high methamphetamine demand. The operation came to light after Canada’s Border Services Agency (CBSA) intercepted a container in Vancouver, initially believed to be filled with fruit juice but actually containing 89% pure liquid methamphetamine. The shipment, destined for Australia, was rerouted with the methamphetamine replaced by a harmless liquid to preserve its appearance.
Upon arrival in Brisbane on September 3, the container was delivered to a property near Jimboomba, where local authorities subsequently arrested the three men involved. They face potential life sentences if convicted on trafficking charges. Australian Federal Police suspect that the smuggling operation was orchestrated by a sophisticated organized-crime syndicate.
